The Illiterate Teacher

The next time someone asks me why I homeschool my kids, I'm going to respond that I want to make sure they're taught by someone who knows how to read and write. Apparently, the public schools can't guarantee that.

The most striking thing in this whole story for me is how he was enabled by others. Had he not convinced his friends to let him cheat off of them in high school & college and his aides to help him in his classroom, he never could've gotten away with his illiteracy.

We need to be sure to help our kids learn the difference between charity and enabling someone to hurt himself/herself.

I noticed that, too. The worst part is, he wasn't just hurting himself. He cheated his students, too.

I just find this story so hard to believe. When I first heard about it I couldn't help wondering if perhaps Mr. Corcoran embellished or exaggerated his reading deficiency in order to cash in on his "15 minutes of fame." Guess I'm just a cynic.

Well, Cheryl, you could be right. But my daughter, who worked in a large Chicago bookstore for several years, told me that some of their dumbest customers were teachers. (she knew because they had teacher discount cards).
